The Nottingham Panthers - 'It's OK to talk about it'

The Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team is working with the Trust on a campaign to end the discrimination of mental health and learning disability.  “It’s OK to talk about it” is the message and staff and service users were at the launch of the campaign on 29 December 2010.

1 in 4 people are affected by a mental health problem and the new campaign, backed by the Panthers is running at all Nottingham home games for the rest of the season.

Over ten weeks Panthers’ home matches will feature shout outs, hand outs and people on the indoor plaza promoting a positive Panthers’ message about mental health and learning disability.

The Nottingham Panthers' mascot PAWS will be helping to stamp out stigma with his spot in the programme giving ten top tips for looking after yourself in a section called ‘PAWS for Thought’.

Tickets are being made available to service users, carers and volunteers for six matches up to the beginning of March 2011.  For more information contact Sharon Eaton on 01623 784770 or email positive.panthers@nottshc.nhs.uk

Mental health problems can affect anybody at any age and if we start to talk about them a little more we might just make it easier for someone to look for help and support.

It’s OK to talk about it.

Human Library

The Human Library plays a key role within Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Anti Stigma Campaign.  It began in October 2009 when the Trust supported the national Time to Change campaign and the Human Library continues to take place throughout Nottinghamshire and further afield.

Human Library

Borrow a Person Instead of a Book

In Nottinghamshire the concept of the Human Library is being used to combat the stigma associated with mental health.  The public is invited to borrow a ‘Living Book’ and ask them about their experiences of mental health.  More than 60 people have taken part as ‘Living Books’ and have covered topics such as:

Schizophrenia
Bi polar disorder
Depression
Anxiety
Mental health and employment
Being a carer
Working in mental health services
Consultant psychiatrist
Substance misuse
Self harm
Eating disorders
Psychosis
Post natal depression

The Human Library has proved very popular with nearly 1000 loans of the living books and is currently being developed into an educational tool for schools and colleges.

For further information or to find out about hosting a Human Library, contact Jonathan Wright on 0115 993 4525 or jonathan.wright@nottshc.nhs.uk
