Four teams shortlisted in the Dementia UK Awards

Nottinghamshire Healthcare, the County’s mental health and learning disability service provider, is proud to announce that four of its teams have been shortlisted in the national Dementia UK Awards.

The awards, which take place on 15 September 2009 at York Racecourse, are organised by the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) and provide an opportunity to celebrate the important work undertaken to support people with dementia in the UK. They are designed to recognise organisations and individuals who have worked to improve the quality of life for people with dementia.

The shortlisted teams provide a variety of services across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County and the Trust are delighted that they have been selected. The shortlist is as follows:

Best innovation in practice category

·               Working Age Dementia Service, County-wide – a bespoke service which recognises the different needs and requirements that people below the age of 65 with dementia have compared to older people with the condition

·               Specialist Dementia Outreach Team, Nottingham City - designed to improve the quality of life for people with dementia living in care homes in the City by using specialist assessments and  ensuring that care home staff have the appropriate skills

·               Acute Care Liaison, Kingsmill Hospital, Mansfield – a team who look after the mental health needs of older people who are admitted to an acute care setting in the North of the County

Team of the year

·                     Autumn Challenging Behaviour Unit, Highbury Hospital – this unit provides assessment and psychological based treatment for older people with severe challenging behaviour.

Simon Smith, Executive Director of Local Services, said, “The Trust is very proud that the teams have got to this stage in the Dementia UK Awards. It is confirmation of the high standard of work we are undertaking around these services and the dedication of our staff to making the lives of patients and their families a little easier. We wish them every success on the night.”
