It will never happen in the East Midlands

On 22 March 2010, Nottinghamshire Healthcare hosts its second annual Emergency Planning Conference. This year’s theme is chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear attack and delegates will learn the risks to organisations and how to respond appropriately in the event of an attack. They will also learn how:

  • To respond to a threat
  • To recognise a suspicious mail item
  • To protect themselves, colleagues and patients
  • Emergency Services and other agencies respond to such an attack.

“Whilst it seems that this kind of severe attack only happens in large cities like London, the threat to cities in the East Midlands is very real” said Janet Sheard, Executive Director – Nursing and Allied Health Professionals. “The aim of this conference is to ensure that our Trust and our local colleagues are fully prepared to respond to such a rare attack. We can also reassure the public that we have robust plans in place should we ever need to act upon them.”

The event will feature a variety of presentations including:

  • Nick Sentence from East Midlands Ambulance Service -  talking about the role of the Hazardous Area Response Team
  • Richard Hampton – Head of NHS Security Management – talking about counter terrorism and security of NHS premises
  • Kevin Cleary from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue – talking about decontamination equipment
  • Marc Beveridge from the Health Protection Agency – talking about how they managed the body of Alexander Litvinenko, who was poisoned with Polonium 210 in 2006.
