Music for the Mind

Two special events using music to raise awareness of mental health issues are being held this week.

Running as part of the 19th annual Nottingham Mental Health Awareness Weeks, both performances feature artists who have experience of mental health problems.

‘Between Words and Music’ will be held on Wednesday 19 October at the College Street Theatre, Nottingham.  All the performers on the night have used or are currently using mental health services and will be portraying their experiences through music and spoken word.  Tickets to the event have already sold out, but those who have missed out will be able to listen to the original works on a forthcoming CD, ‘Between the Notes’.

‘Music Between the Bookshelves’ will take place at Nottingham’s Central Library on Saturday 22 October.  Between 2pm and 3pm members of the public can drop in to watch performances of original music and some familiar covers.

Both events aim to fight the stigma associated with mental ill health by challenging prejudices, promoting a greater understanding of mental health and mental illness and encouraging people to talk about a subject which for many is still taboo.
