Lucy Wade Unit at Millbrook is officially opened

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is holding an event to celebrate the official opening of the new Lucy Wade Unit based at Millbrook Mental Health Unit in Sutton in Ashfield from 11.30am on 27 June 2008.

The ward was been named after former occupational therapist Lucy Wade, who worked at Millbrook and died from a viral infection in 2006.  Lucy’s parents will be formally marking the unit open by revealing a plaque that will be permanently placed in her memory at the entrance to the ward, describing Lucy as ‘A Star So Bright’.

Lunch will be provided for guests and Mike Cooke, Chief Executive and Nick Daibell, General Manager will also talk about the development process and the benefits these new surroundings will provide to patients. Attendees will also have the chance to look round these completed facilities before the Unit opens to patients in July 2008.

Work commenced on site in August 2007 and the project has progressed well, with over £2 million being invested.  The new Unit includes the refurbishment of a former acute ward to provide a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, 11 treatment and therapy beds with en-suite facilities and a new Section 136 suite for people needing to be assessed in a place of safety.

The redevelopments have also included the transformation of the existing Derwent Ward in to the new Mill Fields Centre, which is now a new base for our community services staff.
Sharon Eaton, Business and Development Manager/Project Lead says: “We are really proud that we will now be able to provide these excellent, modern facilities for patients which will improve the healthcare we can offer to the local population.  The Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and Section 136 suite are new local services that we previously haven’t been able to offer and will provide a much more comprehensive level of mental health care for the local health community.”
