Open day for new rehabilitation unit

A special event to view plans and get involved with the creation of a new rehabilitation unit is being held on 28 January 2011.

The open day, which will run from 11am to 3.00pm at the Millbrook Mental Health Unit, King’s Mill Hospital, will provide an opportunity for people to find out more about the development of a locked rehabilitation unit at Heather Close in Mansfield.

The unit will offer 18 beds to clients who have experienced a complex range of mental health issues and require long term support and treatment within a controlled environment.

The unit will be a redevelopment of three of the six existing bungalows which currently make up the Heather Close residential facility which provides care and treatment for service users who are recovering from enduring mental health conditions but not yet ready to return to their home environment.

Staff, service users and carers will be able to view plans for Phase 1 and 2 of the development, talk to the Project Team, preview colour boards and items of furniture, find out about the operational policy and the new keyless card system to be used in the new unit.  There will also be a chance to get involved with tasting samples from the proposed menu, vote for the unit’s name and take part in creating a piece of artwork which will be displayed in the new building.

The new unit will mean that people who have previously had to leave their local area for such care will now be able to access it closer to home.  Caroline Pinnick, Project Lead said:  “Currently the provision of care package for service users requiring an extended period of rehabilitation within a controlled environment is determined on an individual basis following a needs focused assessment.  The vast majority of these placements are significantly outside the locality of Nottinghamshire and also within the private sector provision.  It is great that we will be able to provide this facility within the locality enabling service users and carers the opportunity to be closer to and maintain their links to the communities in which they live.”

The Unit will be constructed in two phases; Phase 1, due to open in April 2011 and  Phase 2, a further 6 beds, planned for October 2011.
