Positive PEAT scores for Trust

Nottinghamshire Healthcare, the county’s mental health and learning disability service provider, has been awarded top marks for levels of Privacy and Dignity for inpatients at five of its sites.

The ratings published today by the National Patient Safety Agency are the results of the Patient Environment Action Teams (PEAT) programme assessment which is carried out annually in all hospitals and inpatient units with 10 or more beds.

The scores of 100% went to the mental health wards at Bassetlaw Hospital, Broomhill House in Gedling, Enright Close Bungalows, Newark, Heather Close Bungalows in Mansfield and the Millbrook Mental Health Unit at King’s Mill Hospital, with the latter three improving their ratings from good in 2009’s audit, to excellent this year.  Overall, the Trust improved or maintained its ratings from last year.

Ratings of excellent, good, acceptable, poor and unacceptable are given following inspection of a range of patient services and environment and are awarded in three areas:

  • Privacy and dignity – (the segregation of men and women in sleeping areas and toilets/bathrooms).
  • Environment – (cleanliness, decoration, linen, furniture and state of repair);
  • Food – (quality of food and its nutritional value);

The assessment teams consist of NHS staff, including nurses, matrons, doctors, catering and domestic service managers, as well as groups of patients, their representatives and members of the public.

Of the fifteen areas where the Trust improved scores, four were rated excellent for the food provided to patients; Broomhill House, St Francis Unit at Nottingham City Hospital, Rampton Hospital and Wathwood Hospital, and four improved their environment ratings to good; Dovecote Centre, Beeston, Queens Medical Centre, Wells Road Centre and Thorneywood Adolescent Unit.

Janet Sheard, Executive Director Nursing and Allied Health Professionals said:  “We are delighted with this year’s PEAT scores.  We strive to provide the best services and environments we possibly can to our patients and work hard to make improvements where necessary and these ratings reflect that.  Thanks must go to all our staff who work so hard to achieve these standards.”
