Presents of Mind - challenging perceptions of mental health

Nottinghamshire Healthcare, the county’s leading mental health and learning disability Trust, will again be supporting this year’s Nottingham Mental Health Awareness Weeks, which returns for the 17th year, running from Monday 5 October – Friday 16 October 2009.

The unique annual awareness weeks aim to reduce stigma and ignorance, and to help promote a greater understanding of mental health. The weeks are coordinated by the local multi-agency Mental Health Awareness Project.

As part of the awareness weeks, the Trust will be holding ‘Presents of Mind’, an exciting and inspiring virtual exhibition by people who use or have used the Trust’s mental health services.

The exhibition will be held at the Broadway in Nottingham and will be displayed on a number of screens throughout the venue. The exhibition aims to challenge people’s perceptions of mental health and features paintings, photographs, textiles and sculptures.

Commenting on the exhibition Penny Coulson, Arts Coordinator, at the Trust, says: “This is the fifth year the Trust has held an exhibition to promote the artistic talents of people who use our mental health services. However, this is the first year we have had a virtual arts exhibition, which has enabled us to showcase work we previously haven’t been able to such as animation and 3-D work. We have also received a larger submission of artwork for inclusion and by holding the exhibition at the Broadway we hope to reach a much wider audience.”

‘Presents of Mind’ will be officially launched on Monday 5 October. Following the launch, the exhibition will be open until Friday 16 October. Admission is free and all are welcome.

To find out more about artwork at the Trust contact the Arts Coordinator on 0115 9691300 Ext. 11853.

The exhibition is just one of many events taking place during this year’s Nottingham Mental Health Awareness Weeks. Further information and a full listing of the programme of events taking place over the awareness weeks is available.
