At the annual Forensic Faculty Conference of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Rampton Hospital’s Research Team was delighted when they were awarded a research prize for a poster presentation on the ‘Causes of death in patients at Rampton Hospital 1913 - 2000’.
In the research, over 500 records of deaths were analysed for cause of death showing changes over the decades. Infectious diseases were the main causes of death in the early years. Subsequently, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases have become the main causes of death.
The authors of the presentation are Trevor Gedeon, Medical Student at Sheffield University and Rampton Hospital; Hannah Jones, Research Assistant, Michael Ferriter, Senior Research Fellow and Dr Irene Cormac, Consultant Psychiatrist. The team worked closely together to undertake the research and to prepare the poster.
Trevor Gedeon collected the research prize which was in the form of a medal on behalf of the team. He was also awarded the second prize in the medical student essay competition.
Dr Cormac commented “It is a great honour for Trevor Gedeon especially so early in his career before he has qualified as a doctor. He is keen to train as a psychiatrist and has a very promising future.
The three day Conference held in Barcelona brought together Researchers and Forensic Psychiatrists from all over the UK to share their work and to attend lectures from experts in the field of Forensic Psychiatry.
