Chief Executive Promotes Recovery at NHS Confederation

Professor Mike Cooke CBE is speaking at the NHS Confederation Conference to promote recovery in mental health. In conjunction with Nigel Groves, Rosewood Involvement Centre Manager, Mike will present the steps Nottinghamshire Healthcare has taken to involve its service users and carers in the development of services and their own personal recovery planning.

Recovery means many things in mental health but encompasses taking back control, choice, hope, opportunity and what each individual wants for themselves and their future.

Mike commented:

“Recovery is a deeply personal, unique process of changing attitudes, values, feeling, goals, skills and roles.  It is a way of living a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life, even with the limitations caused by illness.  Recovery involves the development of new meaning and purpose in one’s life as one grows beyond the catastrophic effects of mental health. As a service user myself this philosophy resonates with me. I want everyone who comes into contact with our services to feel personally valued and to know that they are getting the best services they can. Nigel and I are looking forward to telling the audience just how important this work is.”

Nottinghamshire Healthcare is one of only six NHS Trusts to be selected as national demonstration sites as part of a project to enhance support to people with mental health problems to lead meaningful and productive lives; a concept known as Recovery.

As a designated demonstration site, Nottinghamshire Healthcare has been assessed as already having strategies in place to address these challenges and recognised as a provider of Recovery focused mental health services with the knowledge and experience to support other Trusts to do the same.
