‘Who decides’ – knowing your rights

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, the county’s mental health and learning disability service provider, is holding a special event for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers to find out more about their rights.

The ‘Who Decides’ event, which has been organised by the Trust, Nottinghamshire County Council Adult Social Care and Health and private sector partners, is being held on Tuesday 24 February 2009, 10.00am – 3.30pm, at the Indian Community Centre Association, 99 Hucknall Road. ‘Who Decides’ follows on from a successful event held last year and will include information about how things have changed since the introduction of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, which clarifies the rights of everyone, including people with learning disabilities, in decision-making.

A series of workshops will also be held as part of the event on topics such as ‘Telling people what I want’, ‘Keeping me safe’ and ‘What does the Mental Capacity Act mean for carers’. There will be also be a drama workshop available and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Debbie Abrams, General Manager for Learning Disability Services at Nottinghamshire Healthcare, says: “This important event provides people with learning disabilities and the people who care for them an opportunity to learn more about legislation, which helps them to make decisions and helps others who may need to make those decisions on their behalf. It is also a chance for people to ask questions, to share their views, and to meet others. We would really encourage people to attend what will be a very informative, exciting and fun day.”
