Carers, Families and Friends

Am I a carer?

If you provide unpaid practical and emotional support to a person who has a mental health problem or learning disability you are a carer. You may be a partner, friend, relative or neighbour. A carer can also include young carers who are under the age of 18. The person they look after is often a parent, but can be a brother or sister, grandparent or other relative.

Supporting Carers

Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is a partner organisation with Nottinghamshire Adult Social Care and Health, Nottingham City Adult Services Housing & Health and Primary Care Trusts to provide support and service to carers. If you are a carer it is important to be aware that there is a lot of support available to you.

Carer Assessments and Support

By law carers who are providing or intend to provide regular and substantial care have a right to a carer assessment of need. A carer assessment will help you identify the support you need and how this support is provided. A carer assessment is not just about the support you need as a carer but about the support you need to maintain your own well being. The support you might receive could include information, advice and guidance, Carer Breaks, Carer Support Worker, Carer Support Groups and other services provided by Social Care and Health agencies.

Find out more information about a carer assessment from the Carer Assessment Leaflet on this page, for a copy of the leaflet in another language visit the Information for Patients and Carers section of this website.
