Further and higher education

General guidance for college courses:

•       Current legislation states that, if claiming benefits, people can study for no more than 16 hours a week.   Check with the college as some courses can be flexible.

•       Learners may need to provide their own protective clothing for some courses, such as safety boots and overalls.

•       All colleges have Advice and Guidance teams who can provide information on the various options available to learners.  Some colleges have Health and Wellbeing Advisors.

•       Courses leading to qualifications are usually low cost to those on means-tested benefits.  Check with the college for information on fees for people on other benefits.  There may be additional costs such as administration fees and costs for exams and materials.  Student support and hardship funds may be available.

•       Childcare provision may be available.  Check with individual colleges for details.

•       Individual colleges may have Discretionary Support Funds; ask your local college for further information.
