Low secure units deliver intensive, comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment and care for patients who demonstrate challenging and harmful behaviour in the context of a serious mental disorder and who require the provision of appropriate security underpinned by the principles of rehabilitation and risk management.
Such units aim to provide a homely secure environment, which has occupational and recreational opportunities and links with community facilities.
The Directorate is currently responsible for the delivery of male only low secure inpatient services based on three wards at the Wells Road Centre, Nottingham; Darwin Ward, Thurland Ward and Trent Ward.
It is planned to expand this service in the near future, to provide a dedicated low secure women’s service as well as more beds to return people who have been placed in psychiatric units outside of the local area.
