Personality Disorder Directorate

The Personality Disorder Service at Rampton Hospital provides treatment, care and rehabilitation to 65 male patients.

The Men’s Personality Disorder Service utilises the Care Programme Approach to co-ordinate the assessment, management and treatment of patients.  The recovery philosophy underpins the treatment approach and each patient has his own recovery plan.  The service provides a range of interventions to address the clinical and forensic needs of the patients; and these are delivered within a treatment milieu based on the RAID approach.

The service has four wards with admission / assessment, treatment, relapse prevention and discharge preparation components. Treatment is founded on the principle that evidence based psychological interventions should be provided within a framework of individualised, needs-led and consistent multi-disciplinary care. The service offers a range of evidence-based interventions to ensure ‘best fit’ between treatment and the patient’s need or preferred treatment style. The service aims for all patients to be involved in therapy and they are encouraged to become “partners” in this process.  Whilst most treatments are undertaken in groups, we also provide the same treatments on an individual basis for those who cannot manage group-based interventions. In order to ensure the adapted programmes provide best practice with our patients, all programmes are evaluated.

In order to be admitted to the service, patients must be detainable under the Mental Health Act (1983).  The additional admission criteria requires that; they pose a grave and immediate risk to the public; suffer from a personality disorder; and, that the service is able to offer treatment appropriate to their needs.  All of our interventions have the ultimate aim of reducing the distress arising from a Personality Disorder, and reducing risk to the public or to the patients themselves.

Treatment is founded on the principle that psychological interventions should be provided within a framework of individualised, needs-led and consistent multi-disciplinary care.  The service has a general philosophy of care based on behaviourist principles.

Within the service, specialist treatment programmes are delivered in accordance with the Treatment Pathway Model (journey through care).  It is known to be difficult to engage patients with a Personality Disorder in treatment.  They also have problems sustaining motivation.  Our pathway ensures that patients progress from general, motivational and introductory work on to the Admission Ward, to the more intensive specialist programmes on the Treatment Wards.

The service also provides assessment expertise and management support to other providers who care for Personality Disorder patients, especially HM Prison Service establishments and Medium Secure Unit facilities.
