The Peaks Unit

The Peaks Unit is based within Rampton Hospital, which is one of three High Secure Hospitals in England and Wales.  The Peaks Unit opened in 2004 as a new purpose-built, specifically designed Clinical Directorate within the Forensic Division of Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, to treat Dangerous and Severe Personality Disordered (DSPD) men.  The Peaks was originally part of a national DSPD programme which has been superseded by the development of a new national PD strategy – ‘The Offender Personality Disorder Strategy’.  This outlines plans for integrated pathways for managing and treating offenders with severe personality disorders.  This continues to be the shared responsibility of the National Offender Management Services (NOMS) and the National Health Services (NHS).

Although there are changes taking affect from April 2012 which includes the de-commissioning of the other NHS DSPD facility at Broadmoor (the Paddocks) the Peaks Unit will continue to operate as follows:

•The Peaks is an NHS-based high secure facility providing appropriate treatment as well as public protection proceeding under the powers of the Mental Health Act (amended 2007);
•The Unit provides positive, appropriate assessment, treatment and psychological interventions based on individual needs within a clear treatment pathway;
•The Unit only admits male patients who are recognised as having a severe personality disorder and who present a high risk to others and require specific hospital treatment.

The unit has an agreed capacity of 60 beds across six wards, however there is the capacity to accommodate 70 beds as the Unit has seven wards.  The wards provide treatment pathways ranging from:

•admission / assessment
•treatment

Supported by a specialist High Dependency Unit.

The Unit currently accepts patients from the North East and North West of England who are admitted under the powers of the Mental Health Act (Amended) 2007.

The clinical model is based on an integration of the literature of what works with offenders and what has been effective for personality disorder.

There is a basic 4 step model:

•Patient safety
•Engagement / motivation
•Focus on personality and interpersonal factors
•Addressing criminogenic needs

The unit, for men only, is designed to be therapeutically intact with all treatment, diversional and social activity being provided, and is designed to afford patients privacy and dignity, with en suite accommodation of a high standard.  The ward accommodation is supported by a central resource area offering space for clinical and recreational therapy and has a dedicated Daycare service providing Education, Occupational Therapy, Creative Therapies and a Healthy Lifestyle programme / sports and recreation.
