The Nottingham Centre for Gender Dysphoria provides a secondary and tertiary service for people aged 17 years and over with Gender Dysphoria and/or other issues related to gender and some sexualities.
Who are we?
The Nottingham Centre for gender Dysphoria is a nationally commissioned NHS multidisciplinary clinic which sees people from a wide geographical area including The Midlands and beyond.
We are happy to see anyone over the age of 17 (We accept referrals of 16 year olds who will be 17 at the time of their first appointment) who experiences distress about their assigned gender. We see people with a range of issues to do with gender, identity and sexuality. Not everyone who comes to us will be sure that they wish to change gender and we are happy to see people who wish to have support around exploring issues to do with their gender also. Consequently, you do not have to have a diagnosis of Transsexualism (Gender Incongruence), Gender Dysphoria, or any other diagnosis before coming to see us. Nor is it necessary for you to have had psychotherapy prior to attending. If you have a significant mental illness it is important for you to have it well managed before attending, but a diagnosis such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc, does not mean that you cannot be seen, as trans issues can arise for people with such diagnoses also.
Our clinic incorporates, as necessary, psychiatric and psychological assessment, endocrine assessment and treatment, and, if required, supportive psychotherapy. We work according to our clinic protocol, which is largely based on the forthcoming Good Practice Guidelines for the Assessment & Treatment of Gender Dysphoria by The Royal College of Psychiatrists Intercollegiate Committee and the NHS Guide for GPs and Professionals. The service has close links with surgical services providing sex reassignment surgery (SRS – also known as GRS).
