The Nottinghamshire Eating Disorder Service was established in January 2008 as a countywide service, after combining both the Nottingham and North Nottingham services. This is a specialist tertiary service provided by the NHS to offer outpatient care to adults who are considered to have a severe eating disorder.
The decision was made to have one county service due to inequalities in care provision; this was supported by policy such as the National Institute of Clinical Excellence and the National Service Framework for Mental Health.
The service is part of the Trust’s Local Services Directorate and consists of 7 Specialist Practitioners, 2 Clinical Psychologists, a Specialist Consultant Psychiatrist, an Operational Team Leader and a Medical Secretary.
Partnership working:
The service works in partnership with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Adult Mental Health Services and other Specialist Services across the Trust. The service also works closely with Freed Beeches, a voluntary organisation who provide a primary and secondary care service for those who are considered to have a mild or moderate eating disorder. They offer psychological therapies, complimentary therapy, dietetic support, education / information sessions and carer support.
How does the service operate?
The service operates from a base in the city, but the provision of care is across the county enabling clients to be seen in a location which they find convenient. The service offers treatment to those with a severe eating disorder; this includes both anorexia nervosa and bulimia. It is a tertiary service which offers psychological therapies through out patient clinics in both hospital and non hospital bases. Referrals are made via GPs. Should specialist in-patient care be required the service can arrange a referral to the regional unit based in Leicester.
