Research Opportunities

The Trust has close links with the Institute of Mental Health and the University of Nottingham. The Institutue of Mental Health currently receives approximately £6 million pounds in external research grants and is one of the UK's prime locations for interdisciplinary research in mental health, with 20 full-time professors. Particular strengths of the unit are in neuro-imaging, personality disorder, ADHD, systematic reviewing and service innovation. The Cochrane Schizophrenia Group and the Personality Disorder Institute reside within the Institute of Mental Health.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare is also closely invovled in a number of projects with the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) in conjunction with the Institute of Mental Health.  There are a number of mental health projects looking into the treatment of personality disorder, individual placement and support for people with severe mental health problems, dental and physical health needs of people with serious mental illness and a randomised controlled trial of a specialist mental health team.

The Translational Neuroimaging unit within the Mental Health group is led by Professor Peter Liddle and focuses on how neuroscientific research can assist us in the future clinical managment of psychiatric disorders in general, and psychosis in particular.  A strong clinical focus assists in the design of basic scientific studies to answer key questions arising from everyday practice.  Several novel methods such as magneto encephalography (Dr E Liddle), surface based morphometry (Dr Palaniyappan), oscillatory analysis using EEG (Professor Liddle, Dr Liddle) are utilised in addition to the study of brain networks using structural, functional and diffusion MRI.  Along with the investigation of the pathophysiology of psychosis using neuroimaging, a strong focus on the epidemiology (Dr Doody) and the evidence based treatment (Professor Adams) of psychosis has established Nottingham as a major centre for psychosis studies.

There is opportunity for trainees interested in reseach to complete a Masters degree during Advanced Psychiatric Training and there are a number of clinical lecturer posts for those wishing to pursue a career in academic psychiatry.
