Just help your shelf!

Our new campus

We are delighted to announce that we are opening a new campus of the Recovery College at Nottingham Central Library from Monday 9th January 2017. There will be classes taking place every Monday. We hope that this will give our students more opportunities to access support and education in the city centre.

The first classes will be Introduction to Mindfulness and Anxiety Management. Please contact the Nottingham Recovery College on 0115 956 0827 for further information and details on how to enrol, or you can enrol using our online form.

Shelf Help

However, you don’t just have to use the library to attend a Recovery College course. There is good evidence from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence that reading books can help support you in managing your health, difficult feelings and experiences. Shelf Help is a project that helps doctors to recommend books for patients and service users. These books offer useful self-help tips but can also include personal stories, novels and graphic fiction. But there’s no need to wait until you are advised to read a book by your doctor! We have plenty of leaflets at the Recovery College that can give you ideas on which books will suit you. The topics include:

  • Depression
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Self-harm
  • Anger
  • Eating disorders
  • Panic
  • Mood swings
  • Stress
  • Bullying
  • Anxiety
  • OCD
  • Relationship problems

There are also lots of book recommendations at Reading Well, who run this initiative with librarians. Most of these books are available in libraries, so it’s a perfect opportunity to join your local library. It’s easy to do and free of charge.

The Nottingham Central Library also hosts a book group called ‘Reading for Mental Health’ which meets in the library at 10.30am on the last Saturday on every month. It’s a great opportunity for a friendly discussion and the chance to discover new authors. To find out more about this group, contact Jane at Nottingham Central Library on 0115 876 1933.

The Recovery College Library

Did you know we also have a library at the Recovery College? Just opposite the Admin Office there are plenty of books on a variety of subjects for our students to borrow. There is a great mix of fiction and non-fiction to meet a variety of interests and needs. Why not take a look during your course break?

Have you read any books that you have found useful in helping you understand and manage your mental health? Do you have any recommendations you would like to share? Please post them in the comments below; we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Great article. Thanks for mentioning libraries, we have loads of materials and activities designed to support improved mental health and wellbeing, so pop in to any library to find out more. We're also really excited to be working with the Recovery College and are looking forward to welcoming students to Nottingham Central Library in the new year.
