Children's Speech and Language Therapy (Communication Matters)

Communication Matters is a UK wide organisation committed to supporting people of all ages who find communication difficult because they have little or no clear speech.

Helping your baby and child learn to talk will give them a head start when they start nursery & school. It is never too early to talk to your baby. This leaflet offers hints and tips for how you can help with development of your child's language and communication skills.

 

First 100 words

This leaflet is used as part of the Home Talk service. When your child is learning to speak, there are a number of words that they might come into contact with/use more often than others.

This worksheet offers a list of the first 100 words that you might learn. Ticking off any words that your child understands or is able to say helps you to see and track their progress.

 

Getting a connection with your child with The 4 I's

How to tune-in to your child and help them become more aware about you. The Hanen Centre in Canada has developed several well-researched teaching programmes which are used world wide.  One of their key messages is The 4 I's. 

• Include your child's interests
• Imitate what your child is doing or saying
• Intrude into your child's game
• Interpret what you think your child means

 

Home Talk: for children who are 2 years old, and their grown ups

Home Talk can help when you or your child needs a little extra help with listening or talking skills. Home Talk offers:

• Play activities to support your child's talking
• Visits from your friendly Home Talk worker
• Experienced qualified worker will work with you as you are the best people to help your children to develop good listening and talking skills
