Gastrostomy Feeding Refresher

This session is designed to update learners on gastrostomy care skills including feeding, care of the site, venting and problem solving.

As learners will have previously completed competency in this area. Learners will require one competency assessment following attendance at a Refresher session. Learners have the option to choose either a face-to-face competency assessment where they will be observed feeding the child, or they will be able to complete a scenario-based competency assessment.

Aims of the session

To refresh understanding of: 

• What enteral tube feeding is and why a child/young person might need it
• What a gastrostomy is and how to administer feed via a feeding device safely
• How to care for someone with a gastrostomy feeding device

 

Objectives of the session

• Discuss what enteral tube feeding is and what different enteral feeding routes are used
• Discuss what gastrostomy feeding is and discuss reasons why it may be required
• Explore different gastrostomy feeding devices and different methods of administering feeds
• Discuss what practical skills and documentation is required to care for a child with a gastrostomy including
  • How to care for the stoma site and feeding device
  • How to feed
  • How to vent
  • Problem solving

 

Teaching and learning strategy

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be facilitated during the theory session to include presentations, question and answer sessions with scenario-based learning. There is a large emphasis during this session on group work and learner participation.

 

Target audience

Anyone in a community setting who is caring for a child or young person who has a Gastrostomy Device in place.

 

Delivery format and duration

This session is only suitable for learners who have previously attended the Gastrostomy Feeding course and now need to complete their annual update session.

Update requirement

Annual update required (either attend this course again or complete the e-learning Gastrostomy Feeding course) with one competency assessment (either face to face or scenario based).
