Whole School Approach to Mental Health and Wellbeing Audit

Understanding the wellbeing needs of your pupils is a key part of developing an effective whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing. Our audit helps schools identify strengths, areas of need, and groups of pupils who may benefit from additional support

Whether you have concerns about a particular class, year group, or wider school population, the audit provides valuable insight to help inform your wellbeing strategy and intervention planning.

What is the Audit?

The Whole School Approach to Mental Health and Wellbeing Audit is a pupil wellbeing questionnaire designed for children in Lower Key Stage 2 and above. It uses a balanced range of positively and negatively worded questions to provide a snapshot of pupils' emotional wellbeing and mental health needs.

Benefits for Your School

The audit can help your school to:

  • Identify strengths and areas of need across specific cohorts or year groups.
  • Better understand the emotional wellbeing of your pupils.
  • Target interventions where they are needed most.
  • Evaluate the impact of existing wellbeing initiatives.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to pupil wellbeing to parents and carers.
  • Provide evidence of a proactive approach to mental health and wellbeing, supporting whole-school development and inspection readiness.

How it works

We recommend starting with a specific year group or cohort. Schools may then choose to repeat the audit termly to monitor progress and measure the impact of interventions over time.

Following completion of the questionnaires, we will work with you to analyse the findings and identify appropriate next steps.

How we can support

Our team can:

  • Facilitate the audit within your school.
  • Support staff with administering and scoring questionnaires.
  • Analyse results and provide recommendations.
  • Identify suitable interventions and support pathways.
  • Offer consultation on whole-school mental health and wellbeing approaches.

Understanding the results

The audit identifies pupils within three broad categories:

  • Doing well: Pupils demonstrating positive wellbeing and resilience.
  • Emerging or borderline difficulties: Pupils who may benefit from early intervention or additional support.
  • Significant difficulties: Pupils who may require more targeted or specialist mental health support.

Available support

For pupils experiencing emerging difficulties, we can offer targeted interventions such as:

  • Sleep hygiene workshops
  • Anxiety and worry management sessions
  • Emotional wellbeing groups
  • Resilience and coping skills programmes

For pupils presenting with more significant difficulties, we can provide:

  • Individual support where appropriate
  • Consultation with school staff
  • Advice for families
  • Signposting or referral to specialist services

By identifying needs early, schools can ensure that pupils receive the right support at the right time, helping to promote positive wellbeing and improve outcomes for all children and young people.
