Rowan 1 - Welcome pack

Rowan 1 is a 16 bedded ward with ensuite facilities. The inpatient ward is made up of 16 bedrooms for males with mental health problems. Primarily service users are admitted for assessment and stabilisation of their mental health and are discharged to the community when they have recovered from the acute phase of their illness.

Your safety and well-being whilst in hospital

Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust aims to provide the highest quality care in the safest environments possible and we want to make sure you are kept safe and well during your admission. When you arrive, we will check your belongings and some things may be taken from you for safe keeping. 

Objects that may be removed from you to ensure yours and others safety include - (this list is not exhaustive)

  • Lighters, matches, vapes and cigarettes.
  • Aerosol deodorants, aftershaves, perfumes
  • Scissors, razors, knives, and other sharp objects 
  • Glass, glass bottles
  • Illicit drugs and alcohol
  • Toxic substances (e.g., nail polish remover)
  • Flammable items (e.g., lighter fluid, aerosols) 
  • Cables / chargers

Blanket restrictions for Rowan 1, this is to ensure yours and others safety.

  • Hair dye cannot be used on the ward.
  • Assisted bathrooms are locked when not in use.
  • The activity cupboard is locked.
  • Restricted access to the kitchen/servery
  • Crockery including cups are made of safer alternative material.
  • Bedroom doors are kept unlocked.
  • No lockable storage within bedrooms
  • No visitors allowed in bedrooms.
  • The use of cans within the ward environment is not permitted. Patients will be encouraged to transfer liquids into cups.

The hospital also has blanket restrictions to ensure yours and others safety.

Restrictions on leave and visiting which may depend on local and / or national guidance. This may include reduced, restricted, or stopped leave in line with COVID guidelines for example.

  • Highbury Hospital is a non-smoking site. Ward staff do not escort patients for cigarettes. NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) is available.
  • All parcels delivered to the ward must be searched by staff for prohibited items.
  • Leave is not granted during the night shift often than in exceptional circumstances.
  • Patients are not able to bring their own quilts/bedding to the hospital.
  • Access to the courtyards must be supervised by staff. 

All restrictions are regularly reviewed by senior management.

Some items such as deodorants and perfumes will be stored and given to you when required. Use of some items may need to be supervised. 

Electrical items will need to be PAT tested prior to use (even if new). Staff will arrange this for you. Items will be kept safe in the nursing office until they are tested. 

If you arrive without toiletries / personal products we have a small selection of items, we can provide - please just ask any member of staff.

We also politely ask that you do not bring in large items or excess belongings we do not have the storage for this. 

Occasionally a friendly drug dog may visit the unit we will inform you of this.

Visiting

Visiting takes place in the family room on site. Please speak to a staff member about booking this. If you do not have unescorted leave, you will be escorted by staff to your visits. Any visits to the hospital by young children must take place in the family room. 

Please be advised that between 12noon and 1pm and also between 5pm and 6pm.

Visitors are asked not to attend the ward due to protected mealtimes.

Useful information

The unit has a multi faith room you can access. Please speak to staff if you would like to visit this.

If you do not have access to a mobile phone of your own a phone can be made available for you to make and receive phone calls to / from loved ones.

We also carry out physical health examinations and assessments including ECG, Blood samples measuring BP pulse height and weight and urine samples.

This is to help inform us of any health needs you have.

Thursday’s alarms may sound in the morning for fire testing.

 

 

Consultant and nursing teams

Dr Seedat is the consultant on Rowan 1.

Ward reviews will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. You will be informed of your ward review date and time on a Monday afternoon.

You can invite your relatives to Ward Round if you wish, and any other professionals involved (i.e.: social workers, community psychiatric nurses) can be invited on your behalf. 

Rowan 1 runs with a wide mix of healthcare professionals, nurses, healthcare assistants, student nurses, trainee nursing associates, occupational therapists, drug and alcohol support worker, activity coordinators, peer support workers and carer peer support.

Your team is responsible for your co-ordinating your care whilst you are an inpatient, and you will be allocated a keyworker nurse when you are admitted to the ward. Your nurse may not be in shift every day therefore the nurse in charge is your contact for the day.

Observation levels

When you are admitted to Rowan 1, you will initially be nursed on intermittent observations. This means that a member of staff will check on you every 10 minutes. 

This will allow staff to fully assess your mental state and help us manage any risks that may be highlighted when you come onto the ward. Intermittent observations will be reviewed in your first ward review. If it is appropriate and safe, your observation levels will be re-graded. 

High Observations - This means that you will be always observed within eyesight by a staff member, in some cases you may be always observed within arm’s length of a staff member. 

Intermittent observations this means you will be checked every 10 minutes. 

General with escorted leave - this means that staff check on you every hour whilst you are on the ward, but you continue to go off the ward with a member of staff present.

General - this means that staff will check on you every hour and you are able to move around the unit without a member of staff escorting you. We ask that you return to the ward at an agreed time and the team will use a door board for this information. 

If you are detained under a section (i.e.: Section 2 or 3) you will require leave to go off the ward. This will be discussed in your weekly ward reviews.

We have a selection of leaflets available regarding medication please ask any member of staff.

 

Mealtimes

The ward has a servery where food will be served by ward staff on the ward. 

  • Breakfast 8am 
  • Lunch is served between 12noon and 1pm
  • Dinner at 5pm 
  • Snacks will be provided in the evening. 

The unit can cater for special diets and allergies - should you require this, please let us know.

Out of hours you can be supported to access a vending machine. 

You are welcome to order take-away to be delivered to Rowan 1. For security it is advised if you would like takeaway orders are placed before 8pm.

Highbury Hospital is a smoke free site. If you would like help to quit smoking, please see a member of staff. Nicotine Replacement Therapy such as inhalators, patches and gum can be provided. Staff will not escort you off the ward for cigarettes.

Protected times

The handover and mealtimes are classed as protected times. This means that you will be asked to stay on ward between:

  • 7am - 7:30am
  • 8am - 09:00am
  • 12noon - 1pm
  • 5pm - 6pm
  • 8:45pm - 9pm

This is to ensure that all patients are safe and cared for when staffing levels have reduced due to staff being in handover or working in the kitchen and dining area. It is also to ensure that you have protected time to eat and drink.

Grounds leave starts at 7am and we ask that you do not go out for leave after 9pm. This is for your safety and protection. 

 

 

The ward and outdoor space

The ward consists of 16 single ensuite bedrooms each Bedroom has its own shower room, and every bedroom has an open wardrobe and cabinet for your personal use.

The ward has an activity room, which is well stocked with craft items, DVDs, and games.

Rowan 1 has a laundry where you can wash and dry your clothes.

There is an enclosed open space for you to access for fresh air.

We have a safe in the ward office to keep personal belongings in such as mobile phones and money. Each ward at Highbury Hospital has access to the Hospital Bank. If you bring large sums of money into hospital, we can assist you in transferring it to the Hospital Bank.

Activities

Various activities are available both on and off the ward provided by the activity co coordinators.

Therapy timetables are located around the ward which will inform you of what activities are taking place. These can include healthy eating sessions, walking groups, cooking, and baking groups, relaxation groups. Individual activities are also available.

If no member of your primary nursing team is on duty your point of contact will be the nurse in charge or the ward manager.

Complaints

If you feel that the care you are being offered does not meet your needs or are dissatisfied in any way, we want you to feel confident to raise these. There are two ways that you, your family or carers or others, can complain:

  1. Informally- talk to someone about your concern, you could talk to a member of your nursing team, Nurse in charge, the manager, or the matron.
  2. PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) is a useful service to help you make a complaint, concern, comment of suggestion.
