Blossomwood blooms – Trust project to redevelop mental health unit completes final ward
Nottinghamshire Healthcare is celebrating the completion of a key milestone of redevelopment work at its Blossomwood site which provides inpatient and outpatient services for adults including older adults who need specialist mental health care.
The completion of the third inpatient ward and refurbished first floor areas marks the final phase of a major capital project of redevelopment at Blossomwood which has already seen two other new wards and refurbished reception and dining areas for staff and visitors completed. The project has also included work to provide new staff welfare facilities, a Medical Education Suite, and additional consulting rooms.
Alison Wyld, Executive Director of Finance and Estates said: We are absolutely delighted that the redevelopment of Blossomwood has reached this stage. It has resulted in a fantastic facility for patients to receive care and for colleagues to work. A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in this project and to all our colleagues who continued to deliver care to patients whilst the works have been ongoing. It truly has been a monumental effort to carry out such works whilst maintaining an operational hospital and I also thank all patients, their families and friends, for their patience throughout.
The redevelopment of Blossomwood in Sutton in Ashfield is part of the Trust's programme to eradicate dormitory accommodation and to bring together mental health wards for older people under one roof. It included the refurbishment of some of the existing building and new build to extend the facilities on site.
The unit now provides three wards for patients over 65 - an 18-bed dementia ward, an 18-bed mental health ward and a 10-bed ward for flexible use (both dementia and / or mental health). All bedrooms are spacious with accessible ensuite bathrooms and large bedroom windows providing a quiet view onto woodland.
Both wards offer therapeutic day space and access to landscaped outdoor space for all patients along with communal lounge/dining areas, multi-use spaces for group activities and therapeutic outdoor space. The wards have dementia friendly signage (written and pictorial) to provide patients and visitors with clear direction to all areas and the colour palette of walls/doors and furnishings has been designed to contribute to a calm and therapeutic environment.
Blossomwood continues to provide a dedicated Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) suite, along with a new therapy space, as well as off-ward assessment, therapy and tribunal space, and doctors' residence. Additionally staff have access to a Health and Wellbeing hub, and visitors have 24-hour access to refreshments. There is upgraded CCTV across the site, a new nurse call system and new key tracker system.
Final planned maintenance and essential fire stopping works to the outpatient and ECT departments are ongoing and are due to be completed in early 2026.Find out more about Blossomwood - https://www.nottinghamshirehealthcare.nhs.uk/blossomwood
