Self-referral support for people with Long Covid available in Nottinghamshire
Adults in Nottinghamshire experiencing ongoing symptoms related to Post Covid Syndrome, also known as Long Covid, can self-refer into the Post Covid Service at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP in Nottinghamshire County who has been experiencing persistent symptoms for 12 weeks or more, whether or not you have a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis.
People who would benefit from the service will be experiencing a wide range of symptoms that affect their daily life. These can include extreme tiredness, breathlessness, memory and concentration difficulties (often referred to as brain fog), heart palpitations, dizziness, and joint or muscle pain. These symptoms can appear weeks or months after an illness and may fluctuate or persist over time.
Anna Allen, Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist in the Post Covid Service, emphasised the importance of this service for those struggling with ongoing symptoms:
"Post Covid Syndrome can affect every aspect of a person's life, from physical functioning to emotional well-being. The Post Covid Service is dedicated to supporting individuals as they manage these persistent symptoms. With the ease of self-referral, we hope to reach more people who need help, providing them with the tools and support they need to manage their health."
Michael, a secondary school teacher from Nottinghamshire, shared his experience of living with Post Covid Syndrome:
"I became ill with Covid for the second time in September 2023. After a few weeks, it was clear I wasn't getting better and new symptoms were emerging. I was off work at that time, and a friend noticed I sounded out of breath."
In the early months, Michael experienced headaches, fatigue, brain fog, muscle ache, skin rashes and breathlessness.
"I was off work from September 2023 to January 2024 and returned on a phased basis. I'm a secondary school teacher and was Head of Department, but in February 2025 I resigned from that role. Reducing my hours and responsibilities has helped me manage my symptoms better. It took me a while to recognise that I wasn't the same person I once was and lacked the energy to fulfil my role as before."
After a GP referral, Michael joined the Post Covid Clinic in May 2024:
"The clinic helped me in various ways. I attended online workshops focused on symptoms like brain fog, sleep, muscle ache, breathlessness and fatigue. I also received guidance on accessing support at work. Post Covid Syndrome is a lonely illness and not well understood by many people. Meeting others with the illness and sharing experiences was invaluable. The clinic hasn't cured me, but it has helped me manage my symptoms and improve my quality of life."
The Post Covid Service offers a joined-up approach to care, addressing both physical and emotional challenges through tailored support. The team includes nurses, occupational therapists, vocational rehabilitation specialists, a respiratory physiotherapist, a clinical psychologist, and additional input from medical professionals. They work closely with individuals to assess their needs and provide personalised care, which may include one-on-one sessions, group support, and help with returning to or staying in work or in carrying out daily activities.
