What will I need during my stay?
We will give you bed linen and towels. These are changed regularly. If you come into hospital without your own things, the ward can give you some basic toiletries.
If you stay longer, you will need your own clothes and toiletries.
You cannot bring in your own bed linen or blankets because they do not meet our fire safety rules. You can bring items that help you feel comfortable, such as a soft toy or photographs.
You may want to bring:
- Comfortable clothes, jumpers and jackets
- Nightwear
- Suitable footwear
- Toiletries
- Books, magazines, games or activities (some items may need a safety check)
- Electrical items (these will also need a safety check)
Some things are not allowed on the ward. The care team will explain this before or shortly after you arrive. Some belongings may need to be stored safely, and the team will talk to you about this.
What is a typical day or routine?
Your day will depend on the ward you are on and the treatment you are having.
At Hopewood, we have set mealtimes. We offer education on the ward or at our education base. Young people take part in different therapies during the day. These can be one-to-one or in groups. We also help young people build their independence with washing, cooking and other skills.
Some young people have planned activities away from the ward and may have local or community leave. We support young people to return to the community and can help them attend school, college or appointments.
At the Lookout, young people also have pet therapy and weekly visits from therapy dogs.
Lookout activities

- Burn's night: For Burn's Night, young people baked, tried themed treats such as Irn Bru and Snowballs, and made a bright display with artwork and word puzzles.
- World Religion Day: We worked with our chaplain for World Religion Day. The session helped young people learn about different religions. It led to some lively and interesting discussions.
- Big Garden Birdwatch: For the Big Garden Birdwatch, we teamed up with our education staff and the nature recovery ranger. Young people took part in bird themed activities, including colouring, wordsearches, watching live bird feeds from around the country, using binoculars and counting the different birds seen from the garden.
- Lookout Christmas Fayre
