Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have an interpreter? Can I have BSL?
Yes. If you or your family need an interpreter, we can arrange this for you. We can also give you written information in different languages or formats, including British Sign Language (BSL).
What spiritual support can I have?
At Hopewood, we offer Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care. This support is for young people, families, carers and staff.
Is it all about religion?
No. You can talk to a Chaplain whether you have a religion or not.
What is a Chaplain?
A Chaplain is someone who offers support to people who need it. The word comes from a story about a man sharing his cloak with someone who was cold. Today, Chaplains give care, comfort and a safe space to talk.
What is Spiritual Care?
Spiritual Care is about the things that give your life meaning, purpose and hope.
You can talk to us about anything that lifts you, such as music, art, nature, sport or reading.
We do not try to change your beliefs. We support what matters to you.
What religious support is available?
We are a multi Faith team. We will try to match you with a Chaplain from your own faith.
Our team includes:
- Christian Chaplains from different groups
- An Imam
- A Buddhist Chaplain
- A Rabbi
- A Pagan practitioner
- Non religious Spirituality and Wellbeing staff
If we do not have the Chaplain you need, we will try to find one for you.
Our Chaplains can offer:
- One to one visits
- Prayers or services
- Support in appointments
- Help with food needs such as Halal or Kosher
- Help with festivals like Ramadan, Christmas, Diwali or Eid
We also run awareness sessions about different religions, beliefs, and festivals.
How can I get Chaplaincy or Spiritual Care?
Kev Shaw, the Trust Chaplaincy Lead, is at Hopewood every Wednesday. He can visit you, talk with you, give you resources or link you to a Chaplain from your own faith.
Who will you share information with?
Staff need to share information with each other to keep the ward safe and supportive. The team have regular handovers where they talk about important updates. We also write information in electronic records so staff working with you can see it.
If you agree, we will share information with your family or carers when they visit or during meetings and phone calls. Sharing information with families and carers can help your care. If you do not agree, your doctor will explain this and talk it through with you.
We may also need to share information with other people who support you. This may include community teams, social workers or school staff. You and your parents or carers may be invited to some of these meetings. Some meetings may be for professionals only. We may also send letters or reports. Sharing the right information helps you get the best support when you leave the ward.
There may be times when we have to share information even if you do not want us to. Staff will explain this to you and give you all the information you need, where appropriate.
Do I have access to advocacy services?
Yes, you can get support from an advocate at Hopewood.
Together (for Mental Wellbeing) provide Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) at the hospital. If you are on a Section, you have the right to speak with an IMHA under the Mental Health Act. At Hopewood, all young people can use the advocacy service, whether you are on a Section or staying in hospital informally.
Advocates can help you:
- understand your rights,
- share your views about your care,
- raise concerns or complaints.
- talk through decisions you are unsure about
Advocates are independent. They are not part of your care team. They do not see your medical notes unless you choose to share information with them. They only pass on what you say if you ask them to, or if they are worried about your safety.
Many young people find advocacy helpful. Advocates can help you prepare for meetings, think about your choices, or build your confidence to speak up. They visit the ward often and hold drop ins and community meetings. You can chat with them when they are around.
