Celebrating ICATT South’s 20-year Anniversary
This year marks a milestone for ICATT South (Intensive Community Assessment and Treatment Team), as the service celebrates its 20-year anniversary of supporting adults with intellectual disabilities and developmental conditions. Since the creation of the service, the team has played a vital role in helping individuals stay well, remain in their communities and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
ICATT South provides a specialist support service for adults over 18 who have an intellectual disability, sometimes called a learning disability, and/or developmental conditions such as autism. Referrals to the service usually involve people experiencing significant mental health or behavioural difficulties that place their home life, relationships or independence at risk.
The team also works with individuals who are currently in hospital, providing dedicated support to ensure safe and effective discharge so they can return home as soon as possible.
ICATT's multidisciplinary team brings together a wide range of expertise, including:
- Specialist Learning Disability Community Nursing (with three team members part of the service since day one)
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Speech and Language Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Registered Nurse Associate
- Mental Health Practitioners
- Community Support Worker
- Administrative Support
Together, they offer an exceptional depth of knowledge and experience to meet highly complex needs and provide tailored, person centred care.
Feedback from individuals and families supported by ICATT South reinforces to the team's impact, compassion and specialist skill:
- "The most impactful and outstanding professionals involved in my son's care."
- "Exceptional professionalism, clinical insight, and deep understanding of autism and complex needs. Demonstrating a rare combination of expertise, experience, and compassion."
- "There is nothing that I would have expected and not received from ICATT. The level of attention and overall support our relative has received has been exceptional allowing them the opportunity to enjoy their life to the maximum."
- "I honestly do not know what position he or our family would be in now if you hadn't done all that you have for him."
These reflections highlight the difference the team makes every day-supporting people to stay healthy, safe, fulfilled, and connected to the life they choose.
Looking ahead, ICATT South's work is more important than ever, and the team remains committed to delivering safe and effective mental health and behavioural support in the community.
Ongoing national changes, including the Transforming Care programme and reductions in inpatient beds, continue to emphasise the crucial role of specialist community services. Early intervention and admission avoidance remain central to helping people lead meaningful lives at home, surrounded by the people and routines that matter to them.
The future for ICATT South is one of continued dedication, innovation, and partnership to ensure the best possible outcomes for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
