Matron retiring reflects on 40 year career

Sarah Barrass; Care Home Community Matron, Bassetlaw Enhanced Health in Care Homes service (Bassetlaw Care Home Team), has shared her reflections of her 40 year career, as she gets ready for retirement.

" As I prepare to retire after 40 years of continuous service in the NHS, I find myself reflecting on a journey that has shaped not only my career, but my life.

"I began my, training in 1985 at Mansfield and Worksop School of Nursing, where I earned my Certificate in Nursing. My first role was as a Staff Nurse on the medical wards at Bassetlaw Hospital, and over the years I had the privilege of working in A&E, the Children's Ward, and eventually as a Senior Staff Nurse on MAU. Each role taught me something new, and each patient left a mark on my heart.

"In 2003, I took a leap into Health Visiting. I studied for my Level 5 qualification in my own time and later completed my Public Health Degree in Health Visiting. I spent two years at Manton Clinic, supporting families and young children-but I missed nursing deeply.

"In 2007, I returned to nursing, becoming a community matron, a role that holds a special place in my heart, supporting patients with long-term conditions. I undertook the V300 Non-Medical Prescribing course enabling me to provide truly holistic care for my patients and completed part of the APAC course.

Then in 2020, in the midst of Covid and alongside a long-term colleague, we were pivotal in the setting up of the Bassetlaw Care Home Service. What started as a small initiative grew into a dedicated team that I'm incredibly proud of.

Working with care home residents and staff has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my career. I truly believe we've made a real difference, and I've felt valued and appreciated-especially by the GPs I've worked alongside.

Over the years, I've held many hands, walked alongside patients through their journeys, and shared in both laughter and tears. I've adapted to countless changes, worked through strategic shifts, and always tried to stay true to the heart of nursing: compassion, kindness, and care.

I've had the privilege of working with some truly kind and caring people, many of whom have become lifelong friends. I've loved every part of my career, but the highlight has undoubtedly been building and working with the Care Home Team. Their dedication and heart inspire me every day.

"Now, as I step into retirement, I'm looking forward to a new chapter-one filled with plans, adventures, and most importantly, time with my beloved family and my precious granddaughter, Florence.

"Thank you to everyone who's been part of this journey. It's been an honour, and I wouldn't have chosen any other path.

"With love and gratitude, Sarah."

We wish Sarah a long and happy retirement and thank her for all she has done for Trust patients and colleagues.
