Recognising an NHS career journey featured by Nursing Times
We're pleased to share that Gav Oxby, now a Senior Staff Nurse within our Community Health Care Group, has recently had his career journey featured by Nursing Times.
Gav's story highlights the varied routes people can take within the NHS and the role apprenticeships can play in supporting long-term career development. He began his NHS career in a Band 2 role, progressing through a range of posts as he developed his skills, confidence and experience.
Now a Senior Staff Nurse, Gav is also undertaking training as an Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprentice, combining academic study with hands-on clinical practice. This route allows him to continue delivering high-quality care while developing advanced clinical skills that support both his professional growth and the needs of local services.
The article reflects the commitment required to balance work, study and personal responsibilities, as well as the importance of supportive colleagues and managers in enabling development opportunities. Gav's journey shows how apprenticeships can provide flexible, accessible pathways into senior and advanced clinical roles, even for those who may not have followed a traditional training route.
Gav said, "I started my NHS career in a Band 2 role and never imagined where it would lead. Being able to learn while working has been key to my progression, and the apprenticeship route has allowed me to develop my skills, confidence and clinical knowledge without stepping away from patient care. The support I've had along the way has made a real difference, and I'm proud of how far I've come."
We're proud to see Gav's achievements recognised by Nursing Times and to share a story that demonstrates the breadth of opportunity available within Nottinghamshire Healthcare. His experience is a strong example of how learning and development can support individual careers while strengthening our services for the future.
