We're really proud of Leah Dhand, Assistant Psychologist, Willows (Mental Health Intensive Care Unit),  and Muskan Ram, Clinical Associate Psychologist for acute inpatient wards at Highbury Hospital, who recently attended the INSPIRE programme. This is a scheme developed in collaboration with NHS England to improve the diversity of the clinical psychology workforce.

Inspire leadership programme is designed specifically for postgraduate psychologists from underrepresented communities, with a particular focus on Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals who aspire to pursue a clinical psychology doctoral programme. Leadership skills are essential for success in any field. However, we also recognise that individuals from underrepresented communities may face unique challenges in accessing leadership opportunities. The INSPIRE programme is designed to help individuals to overcome those challenges and develop the skills necessary to become a successful leader.

Through the six modules of the programme, Leah and Muskan were equipped with the tools and resources needed to develop essential leadership skills. This included learning how to communicate effectively, build strong relationships, and navigate their way through the complexities of the health industry.

The programme was led by Kul Mahay, a highly experienced leader with over 30 years of leadership experience spanning many industries, from policing through to healthcare. He provided Leah and Muskan with guidance and support as they navigated their leadership journey and helped them develop the skills and confidence to support their roles in adult mental health inpatient services at the Trust.

The pinnacle of their experience included being invited to the House of Lords for the Human-Centred Leadership event 'Equipping Our Future Leaders with EQ [Emotional Intelligence]'.

Here they spoke with one of the Assistant Directors of Education in NHS England who was keen to learn more about their positive experiences of being psychologists and the clinical associate in psychology (CAP) role. Leah and Muskan now join a network of like-minded individuals who share their passion for leadership and diversity, enabling them to create a more inclusive and equitable future within healthcare.

Our Associate Director of Psychological Professions Claire Pearson supports the programme delivered in person between the University of Nottingham and University of Lincoln campuses of the local Trent DClinPsych training programme.

Dr Zoe Whitaker, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Lead Psychologist, Acute Inpatient and Rehabilitation Services - Adult Mental Health said:

As their line manager I am so immensely proud of them both. Their reflections and enthusiasm throughout the programme have been inspiring and contagious. They both conduct themselves with incredible integrity and embody the core values of our Trust, working to support some of our most hard-to-reach patient cohorts whilst empowering inpatient teams to deliver good care.
