Supporting Family and Caregivers in Early Psychosis

Family members, siblings, friends, and other close individuals often play a vital role in supporting someone experiencing a first episode of psychosis.

While the term carer is commonly used, we have chosen to use caregiver to honour the dedication, compassion, and emotional labour this role entails.

Caregivers provide essential, unpaid, and ongoing support during what can be a deeply challenging and emotional time. Psychosis can place immense stress on the entire family and caregiving network. It is often a confusing and isolating experience, and caregivers may feel unsure about how best to help your loved one.

That's why caregivers need:

  • Clear, accessible information
  • Emotional support
  • Practical guidance to navigate the journey ahead

At the Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) service, we deeply value the contributions of caregivers. We are committed to offering the support, resources, and recognition they deserve as they care for their loved ones.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is a key part of caring for others. Take a moment to read The Trust Carer's Guide to Confidentiality - it's there to support you.

The guide explains:

  • What confidentiality means in a healthcare context.
  • What information can and cannot be shared with carers.
  • How carers can be involved in a patient's care while respecting the patient's rights.
  • Legal frameworks like the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 that govern information sharing.
  • When confidentiality may be lawfully breached, such as in safeguarding situations or when required by law.
