Psychiatrists

We are a group of medically trained doctors who specialise in the assessment and treatment of mental health problems. Our training has included learning how to support people with an intellectual disability.

Our service is for adults over 18 with a confirmed diagnosis of an intellectual disability. This is sometimes called a called a learning disability. We provide psychiatric input across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County, and work alongside colleagues in a multi-disciplinary team.

What we can help with

We will arrange to meet people and find out about the current problem. Sometimes we might do a simple physical examination. We might ask for more information, for example, from people who support and care for the person. We might request physical health investigations if that would help with diagnosis or before certain treatments are used.

Mental health conditions that may be diagnosed and treated by a psychiatrist include:

  • Depression and bipolar disorder.
  • Anxiety and panic attacks.
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Schizophrenia and psychosis.
  • Dementia.
  • Autism spectrum disorder.

After assessment, we will consider what could help the individual. We may prescribe medication, and will explain how we hope it will help. We might recommend other treatments, which could involve making a referral to other members of our multi-disciplinary team.
