Patients Know Best - The Patients Company

Patients Know Best (PKB) is now live

Some of our services are now using Patients Know Best (PKB).

PKB is a free online patient portal that you can access from any computer, tablet or smartphone or through the NHS App.

PKB securely stores all your health information in one place. It sends you instant notifications when new details, such as appointments, test results, or questionnaires, are available.

PKB is initially being introduced in:

In the future

PKB will be introduced in our Mental Health Teams' Waiting Well services, with other teams across the Trust using PKB in the months ahead.

How to register

You will receive an invitation to register for PKB via email or SMS text message if you are currently being supported by one of our teams using PKB.

If you haven't received an invitation but have recently been a patient, you can still register using the link below. Once registered, you can access PKB directly through the NHS App.

Frequently Asked Questions

What devices can I use to log in?

You can look at your PKB record from any smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer.

You don't need to install new apps or update your device.

Just open your web browser and go to the login page.

You can use your NHS login or a special PKB password if you have one.

Can I see my information on the NHS App

Yes, you can.

You can see your questionnaires on PKB inside the NHS app.

To learn more about the NHS App, please visit: NHS App and your NHS account - NHS

Do I have to use PKB to complete my questionnaires?

No.

You can still complete the questionnaire within PKB, without having to register for an account.

Follow the link in the email or SMS messages you are sent.

Complete the questions and submit them.

This will send the information to your clinical team without you needing to register for a PKB account.

Do I have to complete my questionnaires on a computer or smartphone?

No, you do not have to.

If you choose not to sign up for PKB or complete questionnaires online, we will send you information via the post or you can discuss it at your next appointment.

How will I know if you have sent me something new on PKB?

You will get an email or a SMS from PKB.

I already use my GP's online service. Why do I need PKB?

PKB is used by hospitals and other NHS organisations across the UK to share health information.

It lets you see information from our hospital. Your GP online access only shows information from your local doctor's surgery.

How do I update my email and mobile phone number?

You can change your contact details inside PKB.

Just click on 'Settings'.

It is very important to remember to tell your other healthcare places, like your GP surgery, about the changes too!

Will using this change my hospital care?

No, it will not change the care you already get from us.

It is designed to make your experience better and give you instant access to your appointment times and other information.

Can I use an email address that I share with family to sign up?

No. Every patient who signs up for PKB must have their own personal email address.

We use your email to know it is really you on PKB and the NHS App, so it must be unique.

However, you can share your record with a family member or carer, as explained below.

Can I give a carer or family member access to my record?

Yes, you can.

If a carer or family member helps you with your health, you can add them to your PKB record in the 'Sharing' section.

This lets them set up their own account. You get to choose exactly what they can see. This can be very helpful for managing your appointments.

Before sharing, make sure you are happy for that person to know details about your past, current, and future healthcare information.

To invite a carer, go to Sharing > Friends/Family in your record and click 'Add carer.' They will get an invitation by email.

Is the system safe? How can I be sure my information won't be sold?

Patients Know Best is very safe.

It meets all the national rules for health data security and is checked often by outside companies. We chose this system because it meets the high standards the NHS needs for health records.

All your private and health information is encrypted. Only you, the people you choose, and those who need to, can see your health information. PKB does not share or sell your data.

We will still share necessary information about your care with your GP and others outside of PKB.

What is the Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s link with PKB?

The hospital pays PKB to give you this service.

We ask them to create a record for you, and they look after the system for us.

When you start using your record, the Trust still controls all the health information and letters inside it. PKB oversees your account details and any information you choose to add yourself.

What kind of information can I see in PKB?

Your PKB record shows basic information that identifies you, including your NHS number.

You will also see and can answer questionnaires about your care within PKB.

You may see some information, such as appointments or appointment letters from other organisations that use PKB.

Does this cost me anything?

No.

This service is paid for by Nottinghamshire Healthcare, so there are no costs for you. We save money because we don't have to print and post as many questionnaires.

Can I choose to not use PKB?

Yes.

You can contact your healthcare team and ask for your details to be removed from the PKB system.

I am having technical problems. Who should I contact?

If you have technical problems with the system, please email PKB directly at help@patientsknowbest.com.

You only need to give them your name, the name of the hospital that created your account, and a simple summary of the problem.
