East Midlands poster competition winners

Congratulations to our Brecon Ward Team from Rampton who won the poster competition at the East Midlands Mental Health Safety Improvement Programme Learning Event on 14 June.

Also, congratulations to our Safeguarding Team after the Trust’s work on Sexual Safety was recognised after their fantastic animation poster won second place.

Brecon Ward’s brilliant poster looked at supporting engagement, following crisis, in a psychiatric intensive care unit within the personality disorder care stream in a high secure hospital.

The poster illustrated how, by using least restrictive practices, the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) on Brecon, support patients to participate in meaningful occupations.  It was an interactive poster that showcased one of the projects the patients are currently working on, Transitional Stories.  This highlights a range of themes including the types of activities the patients value, what is important to them, what activities they are currently engaging in, and the impact of long-term segregation.

It also illustrated the methods by which the MDT support patients to engage meaningfully in their chosen occupations and how least restrictive practices are employed.  These include the use of individualised long term segregation plans. The specific work of the wards Speech and Language Therapist and Occupational Therapist is explored along with how the MDT then works together to ensure continuity of care to support patients as to access activities in a structured, supported and least restrictive manner.

Whatever the need, as a team, patients are supported in a graded manner to attend the area and activities that best suits their chosen occupations. Occupations that give them a sense of purpose, a sense of autonomy and control, occupations that raise their self-esteem, that build on their self-confidence, their sense of identity and that give them a sense of hope for the future. You can see the brilliant poster below.

Our Safeguarding Team, along with colleagues from the provider collaborative, led workshops throughout the day for delegates on sexual safety in mental health. Three posters showcased the work of the sexual safety project in MHSOP; research exploring women’s experience of sexual safety in inpatient care; and the safeguarding service’s  development of a film animation “Let’s start talking about sexual safety”.  The animation poster won second place, which you can see below.

And last, but by no means least, Topaz Ward team at Rampton got third place. Their poster demonstrates a project they have ongoing converting a room into a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) area where patients can go for some quiet space to practice DBT techniques. There will be safe resources for them to use and it will be a space that can be viewed by staff but give patients a place to sit by themselves. The project aims to reduce self-harm and suicidal thoughts.

They hope to have an electronic board in the room so patients can access distraction activities.
