Positive star winners

Positive Stars is an opportunity for staff to nominate colleagues who have made a real difference to them, their team, patients and other colleagues. We want to shout from the rooftops about our amazing staff and volunteers and show how much they are appreciated.

We know that colleagues often go over and above to support patients, carers and each other.

This is one way to ensure that colleagues are formally recognised for the amazing work that they are doing. Examples include extraordinary care and / or compassion, introducing positive change, generating great ideas, fantastic colleague or patient engagement, being an inspiration, or anything that has made a difference.

Winners are chosen each month who then receive a certificate of recognition from our Chief Executive and have a visit by a senior leader to recognise their good work and formally present them with their certificate.

Below you can see some of the winners and find out why they deserved to win.

Claire Shaw being handed a framed positive star certificate from Jan Sensier

Today, we're recognising Claire with a Positive Star for her outstanding dedication and professionalism in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both her colleagues and a vulnerable patient in a challenging situation.

Claire was asked to visit a patient with a history of drug misuse and violence, who was part of the violent patient scheme due to previous aggression towards healthcare professionals. Concerns had been raised about his missing medications and a decline in his overall health.

Claire carefully planned the visit, attending with a colleague for support, bringing a locked medication box, and liaising with Bronze on-call for further safety measures. During the visit, she not only provided the locked box and took a full inventory of medications, but she also carried out a thorough assessment of the patient's health and personal circumstances.

Through her compassionate approach, Claire identified ways to help the patient manage his medications more effectively and gained valuable insight into his previous behaviours, concluding that the current risk to staff was low. Her actions not only improved safety for future visits but also contributed to a better care plan, reducing the risk of further deterioration for the patient.

Claire's dedication and thoughtful intervention made a real difference - ensuring safer practices for her colleagues and helping a vulnerable patient receive the support he needs. Thank you, Claire, for going above and beyond.
